  5. Disinfectant 3.0 is a new release of our free Macintosh anti-viral 
  6. utility.
  7.  
  8. Version 3.0 detects the new T4-C strain of the T4 virus and a new
  9. version of the CDEF virus. 
  10.  
  11. The new T4-C strain of the T4 virus is very similar to the T4-A strain.
  12. It was discovered at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
  13. by a Gatekeeper user when an infected application attempted to rename
  14. itself "Disinfectant". Thanks to Chris Johnson and his Gatekeeper program
  15. for helping to discover this new strain.

  17. The new version of the CDEF virus was discovered in New York. There are
  18. only minor technical differences between the new version and the
  19. original virus. Unfortunately, the new version escaped detection by the
  20. Disinfectant version 2.9 protection INIT (but not by the application).
  21. The Disinfectant version 3.0 INIT fixes this problem. In version 3.0,
  22. both the INIT and the application recognize both the original virus and
  23. the new version.

  26. about the T4 and CDEF viruses.

  28. Note that this version 3.0 is NOT a major new release of Disinfectant
  29. with major new features. Normally, with Mac programs, a minor upgrade is
  30. indicated by increasing the number after the decimal point in the
  31. version number. According to this rule, this new version should be
  32. numbered 2.10. Unfortunately, Apple's version numbering scheme does not
  33. permit more than one digit after the decimal point. For this reason,
  34. this new version is numbered 3.0.

  36. We also fixed some errors which could cause crashes when scanning
  37. pathological files with very large resources (e.g., the "PSpice"
  38. program).

  40. This version also fixes a problem with Aladdin Systems' StuffIt
  41. SpaceSaver product. In some cases, Disinfectant would improperly report
  42. that compressed files had damaged resource forks. 
  43.  
  44. Disinfectant 3.0 is available now via anonymous FTP from site 
  45. ftp.acns.nwu.edu [129.105.113.52]. It will also be available soon on 
  46. sumex-aim.stanford.edu and info-mac mirror sites, rascal.ics.utexas.edu,
  47. comp.binaries.mac, America Online, CompuServe, GEnie, Delphi, BIX,
  48. MacNet, Calvacom, and other popular sources of free and
  49. shareware software.

  51. Macintosh users who do not have access to electronic sources of free and 
  52. shareware software may obtain a copy of Disinfectant by sending a self-
  53. addressed stamped envelope and an 800K floppy disk to the author at the 
  54. address given below. People outside the US may send an international postal 
  55. reply coupon instead of US stamps (available from any post office). Please 
  56. use sturdy envelopes, preferably cardboard disk mailers.

  58. People in Western Europe may obtain a copy of the latest version of 
  59. Disinfectant by sending a self-addressed disk mailer and an 800K floppy
